Have you wondered what the ugly refrigerator sized metal boxes are that are
popping up on green parkways and curbs in neighborhoods throughout Evanston?
They are called VRADS (video ready access devices) and they may be coming to
a parkway near you soon- compliments of AT&T and the Illinois Legislature.
As cable and phone companies race to upgrade services and gain the
competitive edge they are doing it by installing these esthetically unappealing boxes
on green parkways, curbs and easements throughout Evanston and many cities
throughout the country.
Does it bother you?
* That AT&T can come into our neighborhoods; install these eyesores
without any input from residents?
* That our state legislators passed a law last year fast tracking
approval for cable rivals to enter the pay TV market, stripping away all
authority wielded by city government?
* That there are 95 planned VRADS (40 currently installed) to be built
in Evanston and residents have no input on where they are placed?
* That while improving technology is warranted that this delivery
system: of 19th century packaging for 21st century technology is not?
* That the voice of citizens and their city government has been over
ruled by our state government in the interests of corporate competition?
* That the process by which this occurred not set a precedent for the
future?
If so please attend a meeting where other Evanston residents will voice
their concerns and questions regarding VRADS in Evanston!!!
