>I am embarrassed to admit that earlier today Mark and I got taken in by a woman scam artist who claimed that she had had her car towed and didn't quite have enough money to pick it up. She claimed she was new in the neighborhood and didn't know many people. I took down her name, address, and phone and gave her the $18 she claimed she needed. She promised to have the money back to me in an hour.

Last year, there was an older guy that tried to pull this on a neighbor, but
he mentioned names like "I live at xxxx Dewey, next to the Browns - do you
know the Browns?"

When he asked for money (same towed car story), my neighbor (not knowing
anyone in the neighborhood) asked him for ID and the guy said he left the
house quickly and left his wallet inside.

So my neighbor (a burly young guy, by the way) offered to walk with him back
to the address to get his wallet. They got all the way to the address and
then the guy said he only had the key to the top lock of his house and
couldn't get in.

So my neighbor said "Show me that the key works."

The guy slipped the key he had into the lock (he's talking a mile a minute,
at this point) and says "See? I'm not lying to you!"

And then my neighbor said "Turn the key."
