Residential fire results in fatality of resident
Evanston, Ill. – Evanston fire investigators say the cause of a fatal fire at an Evanston home Tuesday morning is accidental with the origin of the fire being located in the utility room next to the kitchen on the west side of the home. Fire investigators from Evanston and the State Fire Marshal’s Office completed the preliminary investigation and have identified an electrical source as a possible cause. They will work with the property owner’s insurance company for additional testing.
The Evanston Fire Department received the 911 report of a fire at 2121 Cleveland Street , just before 9 a.m. Tuesday December 22nd, 2009. The initial report came from a neighbor who heard glass breaking and noticed smoke coming from the one-story ranch style home.
Upon arrival of Engine Company 24, they reported heavy smoke and flames from the eves and windows of the house. Fire companies attempted to enter the front of the house at 2121 Cleveland to contain the blaze but were unable to gain access because of clutter blocking the doorway; firefighters then made entry via the side door at which time firefighters were met by flames and heavy smoke as they extinguished the blaze. Additional fire companies provided ventilation and search operations. During the search, an 82 year old male was found deceased about 10 feet from the front door under a pile of debris.
Fire damage was contained to that address with no exposure to neighboring homes. Dollar loss is estimated at $100,000. Heat and smoke caused damage throughout the house. The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Fire and EMS assistance was provided by Skokie and Wilmette Fire Departments to cover the City of Evanston while Evanston fire firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.
The fire was struck around 11 AM.
