In pre- “Evanston Plaza” and “Dodge/Crain Condos” days – when the Clayton-Marks facility took up almost 2/3rds of the present plaza – this little restaurant operated as a “truck-stop” style diner located approximately where the 1215 Dodge Ave. unit now sits. Its present location was, at that point in time, a neighborhood grocery store run by a Polish family that resided in the 1100 block of Darrow.
In those days it was not uncommon to see a line of parked semi-trucks on the west side of Dodge Ave., stretching the length of Clayton-Marks from Dempster St. all the way down to Crain St.. Each of those truck's drivers, and others that they would inform via “CB radio”, was wise as to where they could obtain “homemade” meals that were not only satisfying and filling, but economical as well.
Eventually the grocery-store owners, who also owned the 2 properties to the south of that building, chose to move further out in the suburbs and sold those 3 properties to the original “Ted” (Ostrowsk[i/y]). After some years he too decided to sell to the present owners of the properties, “the Smyrniots”, for their first attempt here in our neighborhood.
They ran the restaurant successfully until the parents decided to return to Greece, at which point they leased the restaurant to numerous different managements. That was almost “the beginning of the end” for “Ted's”; but, as luck would have for us, the Smyrniots children have decided to give the business a second attempt.
This reincarnation – after undergoing extensive remodeling under the scrutiny of City inspectors – is tauted as “...it reminded me of the old 50's diners I used to go to as a kid - all that is missing are the table top juke boxes with music...”; at the very least, it is in much more sanitary and clean condition than under the previous few managements, and expectantly the quality of their meals will be better too.
They will officially open for business – “cash-only” – on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 6:00am.
Their normal hours: M-F / 6-3, Sat. / 7-2, closed on Sunday.
Telephone: 847-332-1900; take-outs $.25 extra.
Their menu consists of various breakfasts, hot/cold regular and club sandwiches, 5 dinner choices, or 3 salad choices. Prices will range from $1.00 (add fries w/reg. sandwich or an extra egg w/breakfast) up to $9.95 (grilled pork-chop dinner). A cup of coffee will cost $1.25, or $1.60 “to go”.
