For the next time:
Dog trainers seem to be in agreement that the best way to break up a dog
fight (or make a dog release their bite on another dog or human) is as
follows:
The safest way requires 2 people. Each person grabs the back feet of one of
the dogs and then picks their feet up like a wheelbarrow. This will remove
the dog's "thrusters" and will diminish the power of their bite. They will
let go of their bite, either to rebite or turn at you. With the legs up, both
dogs are then pulled apart.
The people need to turn in a circle while backing up to prevent the dog from
curling around and biting the person holding their legs. By circling, the dog
has to side-step with its front feet or it will fall on its chin.
Once the dog fight is broken up and the dogs pulled apart, it is critical
that the dogs are not released or the fight will begin again.
I know of this technique being successfully used by a 125 lb. woman three
times, including against an Akita and a pit bull.
If you are alone, the recommendation is to anchor one dog by looping a leash
tightly around its waist and anchoring it to a fence pole, then going after
the second dog with the wheelbarrow method.
Legalese: I am not a dog trainer. The information above has been learned over
the years and can be found in various dog forums across the internet. It is
your choice as to whether you use this method and you take full
responsibility for the subsequent events.
Good luck!
