Walker Appointed Evanston Director of Community Development
EVANSTON, IL – Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz has announced the appointment of Lehman O. Walker as Director of Community Development. Mr. Walker will begin his duties on December 7, 2009.
Walker brings to the position over thirty years of municipal community development experience both in the United States and Canada. Walker is currently Director of Community Development for the City of University City, Missouri where he has held that position since 1998. Prior to his service there, Walker served for six years as General Manager of Planning and Development for the City of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada and four years as Director of Planning and Community Services for the City of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Walker received a Bachelors degree in Social Science and Masters Degree in City and Regional Planning from California State University, Fresno. Additionally, Walker holds a second Masters Degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in Public Administration and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
“Mr. Walker brings to Evanston a wealth of community development and economic development experience,” explained Wally Bobkiewicz, Evanston City Manager. “His last eleven years in working for University City has exposed him to many of the same challenges faced by Evanston. University City is similarly a diverse community with a large college student/faculty presence due to its proximity to Washington University in St. Louis.”
“I look forward to Mr. Walker assisting Evanston in moving forward in the critical areas of economic development, community planning, affordable housing and code enforcement,” added Bobkiewicz.
The City of Evanston's Community Development Department provides overall program administration and coordination for housing, planning, zoning, economic development, property standards, building permits and construction activities.
