*Urgent Bulletin*
This is a reminder to keep on your toes and call in whatever *YOU* perceive to be suspicious activity. We continue to be plagued by burglaries; however your efforts are still paying off, with that said, there were two burglaries yesterday with the same suspected method of operation:
#1. Thursday January 08, 2010 sometime about Noon:
Two 18- 20 year old male Hispanics were in the 800 block of Brown, knocked on doors asking if they could shovel snow. In this case, a homeowner who was working from home declined the offer and went about his business. However, the homeowner thought about it and realized that the two men had no gloves/mittens nor a shovel or any other tool for shoveling snow. The Hispanic males were described as being 6'0", 160-170 pounds and both were wearing blue "hoodie" sweatshirts.
A short time after the neighbor had declined the offer from the two men, the police department received an activated burglar alarm from the victim residence. An officer arrived and found a rear door obviously kicked in, along with foot prints in the snow. Additional officers responded and a search of the area was unable to locate the two men, several items were stolen from the home.
#2. Thursday January 08, 2010 sometime about 2:00pm:
700 Block of Sheridan Road, nearly the same scenario, except in this case, after declining the offer to have their snow shoveled, the suspect reappeared later and claimed to be doing plumbing work. One suspect kept the homeowner busy as the other entered the home and took items. The suspect descriptions are the same and in both cases, they offered to shovel snow, but appeared to have no equipment to do it with.
Lets catch these guys if they dare to come into our area !!! Please call if something is suspicious to *YOU*, just gather what information you can. When you call, articulate to the officer "What" is suspicious and all available information (I.e. description of the people, vehicle they arrived in, their current location, conversation that you had with them). And Please Please Please !!! The desk officer may ask "would you like to leave your name". Let me take on minute and emphasize the importance of leaving call-back information.
As an officer for several years, I have been on the receiving end of a dispatch where the call is for a "suspicious person at a given location, I was supplied with no information as to why they were suspicious, a description, a direction of travel nor anyone to call back for any additional information. I go to the area, find nothing and I go to the next call. The perception for the caller is that they called, gave information or a tip and the officer did nothing but drive by and leave. If you call in a complaint, it is VERY important that you leave call-back information. Now, with that said, you may also tell the call taking officer "I do not want an officer to come to my door, but you may call me back if you need additional information"; this is perfectly acceptable and leads to many more arrests, as well as a better understanding between police and citizens.
